Aussie Outback Abstracts
AUSSIE OUTBACK ABS\TRACTS
This collection of abstract photographic images was created by Roger “Mzungu” Moore in the summer of 2007. The location was the far remote outback of the Kimberley region of the Down-Under continent – Australia. More specifically, the location was the far northern part of Western Australia.
As most of you who follow the work of Mzungu can tell, this Collection is very, very different from his typical work.
1. The work is abstract! Although Mzungu’s images are far from documentary, leaping into the realm of pure abstraction is a big leap.
2. The work is Color! Black & White – that is Mzungu’s image of choice for his personal work. Although he is a master of color photography, color has almost always been the medium for his commercial assignments.
3. No Photoshop! What you see is what was there … in the outback. Mzungu swears that these are the real colors – no manipulation, and no manipulation of shapes, patterns or textures. Mzungu likes to say “Never let the camera have the last word”, because he feels the camera produces ‘fast food’ & it is his desire to serve gourmet meals to his Patrons. He can’t help it. He has been so strongly influenced by Ansel Adams and John Sexton, the master-manipulators of photographic images. But in this Collection, this is the real deal.
When people first view an Aussie Outback Abstract Image, invariably they ask: “What is that?” Mzungu invariably answers: “What do you want it to be?” He continues to follow the advice of his mother, who was an accomplished visual artist, when she would tell him: “It doesn’t matter what something is … only how it looks.” So when you meet Mzungu, don’t waste your breath asking such questions. Just free yourself from your logical brain’s insistent desire to identify, codify, organize, and classify whatever you see. Relax, free yourself, allow yourself to be transported where ever your feelings with to take you.
